Taking Care of Dogs in the Hot Weather

With the heatwave expected for the next few days it is *SO* important to remember that our furry friends may not be enjoying it as much as we are! If you're hot in your t-shirt and shorts, imagine how your dog feels in all that fluff!

So here are some tips for keeping dogs happy and safe in the hot:

*Check the temperature of the pavement with your hand or bare foot before heading out. Hold it on the floor for at least 5 seconds. If you cannot keep your hand on the floor for 5 seconds then the floor is too hot for your dog to walk on. If you wouldn't walk bare foot on the pavement DON'T make your dog.

*Always take water with you, even on short walks

*Try and stick to shaded areas and avoid long periods in direct sunlight

*Avoid going out in the middle of the day - early morning is best, before things have heated up or late evening if not!

*If your dog doesn't want to go out because of the heat, don't make them!

*Take extra care with black or double coated dogs as they will likely suffer the most

*Remember that different sizes of dogs have different tolerances for the heat.

And finally there is absolutely no reason or excuse to take your dog out on the hot weather. Your dog won't die from missing 1 walk, however they CAN die from heat stroke so JUST DON'T DO IT.

If you see someone walking their dog in the midday sun stop them and educate them about the dangers! Some people have no idea so share awareness and help them learn!
