The Parish of Hellingly Book Review
If you love local history then the new book just published by John F Pitcher is a must buy.
‘The Parish of Hellingly in Historical Photographs from the Pitcher Family Album’ is an insight into the lives of the Pitcher family, who have lived in the Parish of a Hellingly continuously for nearly 400 years.
The book follows the lives of the family in the Parish which was compiled by author John’s late father Ernest, who was an avid historian. Ernest’s brother Frank was the keeper of many of the family photographs, which John shares with us in the book. Beginning in the 17th Century, when it is thought the Pitchers arrived to the Parish, the book follows the fortunes of the generations through the time of the local Swing Riots and two World Wars, up to the present day.
I particularly enjoyed how this book followed John’s family story, told alongside family portraits, together with photos of Hellingly and Horsebridge rarely, if ever, seen. Although this is a personal family record it is also a marvellous reflection of times past in Hellingly.
The profits from this book are going to the Hailsham Historical Society. Priced at only £7.99 it is available from the Hailsham Heritage Centre (www.hailshamhistoricalsociety.co.uk) or direct from the author - email: firstname.lastname@example.org
